EURO-BULLETIN - 8 March 2011

Congratulations to any councillors reading who voted against increasing our net contribution to the EU budget by 60 per cent while cutting the grant to local authorities. Administration becomes more wasteful as it gets further from the electorate. Local councils are generally more efficient than Whitehall departments, which are in turn more efficient than European Commission Directorates-General. It is madness, at a time when every level of government in Britain is looking for savings, to be increasing our tribute to the most remote and inefficient tier of all.

I am very proud to say that three South East councils have followed Medway in condemning the budget hike, and in asking their local MPs to vote against any future rises: West Berkshire, South Bucks and Adur. So, further afield, has Labour-dominated Hartlepool.

If you are a local councillor, why not propose a similar resolution (see here for details)? If not, you could suggest to your councillor that he or she do so. Ponder this: in the few moments that you’ve been reading this bulletin, Britain has transferred around £45,000 to the EU. As David Cameron kept saying during the election, we can’t go on like this.
